Does a gluten intolerance/celiac disease cause soft, white spots on teeth? Do they go away after a GF diet?

Okay… would somebody with a gluten intolerance or Celiac disease have white, soft, sticky spots on their teeth despite diligent oral hygiene? After being on a gluten free diet, would these spots on the teeth go away?

Yes, you can get spots.

Celiac disease causes you to miss out on many nutrients. This can cause the spots, as well as many other health problems.

Following a gluten free diet should help.

good luck

I have a gluten intolerance and I have never had the spots. I would check with a doc.

I’m not a Dr just a NEW Parent to Celiac Disease but my 11 yr daughter was diagnosed in January and we are currently testing my 7 yr old son. My children have these spots and they have terrible teeth. In the last 6 months my daughter had 6 cavities appear and they are bad. She did not have these 6 mo. ago. My son also has these same teeth problems. My oldest son is Celiac symptom free as far as we know & he does not have these issues. I do know some medications can stain and discolor teeth. I don’t know if that helped or not I’m still trying to figure this disease out.

SInce celiac can present in a manner of "malnourishment"
it only stands to reason – if a malnourished patient could have those spots…..then a celiac patient could also have them.

remember celiac basically causes damage to Villi – in the intestines which make the person not absorb food – as if they were not eating enough or being malnourished.

Not sure if they would go away – but I expect they would if the patient is no longer being "malnourished" Villi can take a while to heal too.

Be careful of hidden gluten – in things like Malt flavoring in rice crispies and corn pops & Soy sauce in chinese and restaurant food.

I’ve never seen any reference to anything like this, and I suggest you ask a dentist to take a look.
